The Pantheon began as a temple dedicated to the seven planetary deities, commissioned by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, built in 27 BC and rebuilt by Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD.
Abandoned by the first Christian emperors and then sacked by barbarians, it experienced new splendor beginning in 609 AD, when it was donated to Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the temple to Santa Maria ad Martyres.
Inside it holds the very ancient Byzantine Icon of the Virgin and Child.
Around 1625 the two bell towers placed on either side of the pediment were built.
In 1870 it became the shrine of the Kings of Italy, housing the remains of Victor Emmanuel II, Umberto I and Margaret of Savoy.
The Pantheon is characterized by a cylindrical structure anticipated by a portico with Corinthian columns.
Its dimensions are particularly impressive: the height of the building is about 43 meters, the same as the diameter of the dome.
The most important feature of the Pantheon is the large oculus that opens in the center of the top of the dome. It measures 8.92 meters in diameter and allows natural light to enter, illuminating the entire building.
